There’s a nostalgia factor to film that’s impossible to replicate; as the primary medium of photography for 100 years, film often evokes the memories of looking at old family photos and our collective and personal histories. Film goes beyond vibes, though; film renders differently—skin tones, highlights, colors, contrast--all have a unique quality. Plus, in the age of AI, there’s no faking the physical process of light captured in emulsion and chemically developed.
If you love the look or vibe of film photos, then you should consider adding it to your session. Film photography is available as a standalone experience or as an add-on to any digital session. Many clients enjoy the combination—digital for clean, flexible coverage and film for its look and feel.

Film photography Session
In addition to standard digital images, I also offer my photo sessions on film. I started my photography journey on film, and I happily accept every opportunity to share my love of the medium. Film sessions provide just the right amount of time for us to get to know each other and for everyone to get comfortable in front of the camera.
My approach is rooted in lifestyle and documentary photography, creating space for you to interact naturally while I guide just enough to keep everything feeling effortless and relaxed. Shooting photos on film doesn't guarantee great photos; having a great experience while we're together is the key to success.

Film Add-on
If you just want a touch of the film aesthetic, you can add a roll of film (color or black & white) to any digital session. I'll shoot film pictures alongside the digital. You'll receive 4x6 prints of each image taken on film in an envelope just like the olden days. Want to learn more? There's a blog post for that.

FAQ
Should I go for film or digital?
Shooting a film photography session can be a little tricky, so I tend recommend digital for a typical family photo session, especially if there are littles involved. For a something a little more portraiture-oriented and less running-around-in-a-field, either will work well.
For real, will I notice a difference with film?
You'll notice the biggest difference if you zoom in closely on the photos, which is where you will likely see the film grain. For prints larger than 8x10, you’ll see more grain as well. Is that good or bad? I love the look of that film grain, so it's all good for me.
Will it take longer to get my photos?
Just in case, I ask for an extra week beyond my usual 2-week window, so you should get your photos back in 2-3 weeks.
I notice your style of film photography doesn’t look like the trendy ‘90s vibe with the harsh flash.
I lived through that phase the first time when that’s just how it was. If you like that snapshot vibe, I’m happy to work with you to get the look you like. I can definitely make it happen, but it's not my personal go-to thing.
Why is it more expensive?
Because film is expensive! While it’s seeing a resurgence, film is still a niche product, so it’s expensive. A roll of Portra (now Ektacolor Pro) 400 (AKA: the good stuff) is $17. Add $15 for developing. I only use the best film stocks for portrait sessions, but the investment is worth it. Development for color film is currently outsourced to Photo-60 Studio in Woodbridge, VA because they do a fantastic job. I process black & white film on my own. Then I personally scan each developed negative, which is a time-intensive process.
Color or Black & white?
Ah, the eternal question. You can't go wrong with either option. I love the classic look of black & white, but color is closer to how our eyes perceive the world. If you can't decide, go with a roll of each. Good luck in your choice!

That's me over there taking a selfie in a shard of mirror that someone glued to a wall (like you do). I started my photography journey with film way back in 1999, and I'm excited to offer the experience to others.
As a Woodbridge-based photographer, I serving the greater Northern Virginia and DC areas. I take photos of people and their pets--families, couples, individuals, dogs, cats, or whatever furry, scaly or feathered companion you might have.
